A New Year

As we approach a new year most of us think about resolutions to change ourselves for the better. We look at our shortcomings and our mistakes of the past and we resolve to do better; only to have that resolve wane and old habits return. I gave up on resolutions years ago because I knew myself well enough to know I wouldn’t stick to them. So you may be wondering if this is a blog about my weight loss journey, how have I managed to have any success without resolutions? To answer that question, perhaps I should back up and share my struggles and where I am now on this journey.

I was an average weight kid until around the age of nine. In the third grade I begin gaining weight and except for a brief time toward the end of my Senior year in high school and off and on during college and the few years after college when I began my teaching career, I have been overweight. It didn’t take long on my 5′ 1″ frame for the pounds to accumulate to the point where in the past decade I was obese. Not only were my clothes getting smaller, but my health was becoming more at risk, and I was tired from carrying so much weight on my small frame.

In my next blog post I will go into more detail about my history but as I think back on this past year I thank God that I finally gave it all I had and so far have lost 77 pounds with 23 more to lose to reach goal weight. Yes, I will have lost 100 pounds by the time I reach my goal weight. Last January 1st I didn’t make a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight. Instead this past year I turned to God who is the source of my strength. I picked Phil. 4:13 as my verse to guide me in this journey to a new healthy me. I know that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Back up one verse and Paul tells us simply that you can find happiness in whatever circumstances; whether in hunger or fullness. All we need to do is look to God for our source of strength.
“I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. “(Philippians 4:12, 13 NKJV)
I will leave you with one other verse:
“Keep your eyes open, hold tight to your convictions, give it all you’ve got, be resolute, and love without stopping.” (1 Corinthians 16:13, 14 MSG)

My prayer for you is that if you struggle with eating in excess, that you will begin to make changes for a new healthier you in 2014. Remember to allow God into your heart to make this journey with you. Happy New Year! Continue reading
